Edmonton Oilers players Zach Hyman, Connor McDavid, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins celebrate a goal during an NHL hockey game in Edmonton.

Zach Hyman's Resurgence Fuels Oilers' Momentum

The Edmonton Oilers have found their rhythm back, and a significant part of that resurgence is thanks to winger Zach Hyman. After a challenging start to the 2025-26 NHL season, Hyman has now returned from a wrist injury, leading the team with his play and contributions on the ice.

Return from Injury: A Slow but Steady Comeback

Hyman’s journey back to the Oilers lineup has been nothing short of inspiring. He missed the first 19 games of the season due to surgery on a wrist injury he sustained during the Western Conference final last spring. His return on Dec. 1 marked the beginning of a gradual adjustment period, which is to be expected after such a significant injury.

Adjusting to the 'New Normal'

“I’m very proud of the way I’ve been able to play coming back from injury,” Hyman reflected after a morning skate. “It’s not easy being hurt. It’s not easy going through rehab. It’s not easy when you literally can’t access your wrist, your hand, and it’s a long process to get back.”

Despite the difficulties, Hyman recognized the benefits of having six months to train and prepare for his return. “It’s the first time in a long time I’ve had six months to actually train,” he said. “My mind felt great, my body felt great. The wrist takes as long as it needs to take to find that touch around the net.”

Scoring Touch Returns

Hyman’s slow start upon his return was expected, but as the weeks went on, his scoring touch returned with a vengeance. In his last 10 games before facing the New Jersey Devils, he scored eight goals. Since returning, he has accumulated 19 goals and 31 points, placing him fifth on the Oilers in points and third on the team with a plus-10 rating.

Impact on the Oilers' Performance

It’s challenging to attribute a team’s success to a single player, but since Hyman found his groove, the Oilers have seen a significant improvement. When Hyman returned, the Oilers were sitting at 11-10-5. During his recent 20-game tear, where he scored 17 goals, the team has gone 12-6-2, showing a clear correlation between his performance and the team’s success.

Chemistry with Connor McDavid

One of the key factors in Hyman’s resurgence has been his chemistry with superstar centerman Connor McDavid. Finding wingers who can effectively play with McDavid has been a challenge for the Oilers, but Hyman and McDavid have found almost instant chemistry once reunited. “You have to go out and play your game,” Hyman said. “You try to get him the puck as much as you can, but don’t force it. It’s like basketball, the more you can get it to your best player, the better off you’re going to be.”

Adapting to the Injury

While Hyman is back to his usual rambunctious style, he has had to make some adjustments to his game due to the injury. He’s still as aggressive as ever, but he’s adapted to be more full-body and less reliant on his hands, as a precautionary measure. “You adapt and be a better version” of the physical player, he said. “It’s the new normal you deal with.”

Mental and Physical Preparation

The mental and physical preparation that went into Hyman’s return cannot be overstated. He emphasized the importance of patience and trust in the rehab process. “The first 10 games, you have no pre-season; you’re just kind of going into it,” he explained. “You go from skating by yourself to skating with the group to all of a sudden a week later you’re playing games. You have to get caught up pretty quickly.”

Looking Ahead

As the Oilers continue their season, Hyman’s impact will be crucial. His ability to find the net and contribute to the team’s success has been a welcome addition. The Oilers face the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night, a game that will undoubtedly showcase Hyman’s resurgence and the team’s improved chemistry.

Hyman’s journey back from injury is a testament to his resilience and dedication. His performance has not only lifted his own game but has also energized the entire Oilers roster. As the season progresses, fans will be watching closely to see if this newfound groove can carry the Oilers to greater heights.
