UMich Launches New Centralized Student Accommodations Website

The University of Michigan (UMich) has recently launched a new Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services (SAAS) website, designed to better support students with disabilities by consolidating resources from various departments into one accessible platform.

Streamlining Resources for Better Support

The new website combines resources from Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), Academic Support and Access Partnerships, Testing Accommodation Centers, and Adaptive Sports and Fitness. This centralization was prompted by SAAS's desire to renew its digital presence and make it more helpful and accessible for all students.

Evans on the Digital Transformation

Chip Evans, assistant director of the Testing Accommodation Centers, shared insights on the launch in an email to The Michigan Daily. He emphasized that the university's approach to meeting student needs has evolved since SSD was created decades ago, and the new digital space aims to reflect a more holistic approach to student support.

"How we meet our students’ needs has changed since SSD was created decades ago, and how SAAS meets needs will undoubtedly shift in the decades to come," Evans wrote. "We hope this digital space can also help build a stronger sense of community and belonging among disabled students at the University of Michigan."

Greater Accessibility for Student Resources

Evans further highlighted that the team recognized the need to update their digital presence to reflect a more comprehensive approach to student support. The new website is expected to bring about greater accessibility and ease of use for students seeking accommodations and support services.

Student Response to the New Website

LSA junior Maya Fakih, president of KinectAbility—a student organization that promotes awareness about student accessibility—expressed her approval of the centralization of resources. Fakih noted that even she had struggled to help students find their accommodations due to the scattered nature of resources previously.

"Even I have struggled to help students find their accommodations, because it (was) literally everywhere," Fakih said in an interview with The Daily. "It was so difficult for me at first. So looking at it, I’m like, ‘Actually, this is pretty helpful.’ So it was a great idea."

The Impact on Student Life

The launch of the new website is expected to have a significant impact on student life at UMich. By providing a single point of access for all accommodation-related resources, the university aims to enhance the overall student experience and ensure that students with disabilities receive the support they need to succeed academically.

A Step Towards Inclusive Education

The initiative aligns with UMich's broader commitment to inclusive education and support for all students. The university has long been recognized for its efforts to create an environment where students from diverse backgrounds can thrive. The new website is another step in this direction, ensuring that students with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities and resources.

Future Plans and Adaptations

According to Evans, SAAS will continue to adapt to student needs and evolve its services as required. The new digital space is not just a static resource but a dynamic platform that will grow and change with the university's student body.

Conclusion

The University of Michigan's new centralized student accommodations website represents a significant step forward in providing accessible and comprehensive support for students with disabilities. By bringing together various resources under one digital roof, the university is making it easier for students to navigate the complexities of accommodation services and access the support they need to succeed. This initiative underscores UMich's dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all its students.
